I bet you never heard about the city
where I was born more than 50 years ago
Maybe someone told you that we have a channel crossing
and a lock where the ships are lifted up and down
There's the Emperor William Monument on the mountain in the distance
When we spot it from the highway we know that we are coming home
And in the summertime we celebrate by the river
You should join us one day, 'cause it's a big fun.
There is nothing really special, but wait,
there's the cozy old town
When you go over one of two the bridges
You can spot the house, the house I grew up in. Oh yes.
And as you know it from other cities,
it's a bit broken in the station district oh yes it is. It really is.
And the people here sometimes make me smile
and sometimes they make mefrown
I don‘t have to say the city's name
because maybe you do feel the same
when you think about your own hometown
I wasn‘t born in London or Berlin!
But hey! This doesn’t really make me feel down! Oh no
How often did I dream to leave
and to never come back here no more? No more, no more
But no matter where I go a part of my city
will always be with me, be in me
What I don't like about the people here is
that they tend to complain and to rant
On the other hand they are always honest
And they'll get you down when you take off
Here I buried my father, my grandma, my uncle
And when my time has come and they have get rid of me
Then I'll ask them to bury half of my ashes here
and to throw the other half into the sea
I don‘t have to say the city's name
because maybe you do feel the same
when you think about your own hometown
I wasn‘t born in London or Berlin!
But hey! This doesn’t really make me feel down! Oh no
How often did I dream to leave
and to never come back here no more? No more, no more
But no matter where I go a part of my city
will always be with me, be in me
Always be in me
